Douban.com

Douban.com seems fascinating. Douban.com is a Chinese book prices comparison website which id combined with the ideas of social bookmarks and tag words. You may consider that it is a del.icio.us for books. User can register a free account, and he or she can add any book into his or her bookmark while others can learn about who had bookmarked this book. You can post and read comments about your favorite books by browsing the tag words, too. Douban.com supports also some cool and interesting functions such as you can put a book list that you recently bookmarked on your weblog sites, and you can even list all the book cover images.

I think Douban.com is a good environment to manage cyber communities based on reading. Nowadays bookmarking and tag words seem to be the mainstream of online services, for instance, flickr.com, techorati.com and so on. However, it is surprising that it is Chinese who apply such ideas on books, and moreover I hope that these applications could be applied on not only commercial book prices comparison web sites but also public digital library systems. I hope that such web sites could offer metadata about books in MLA citation style or formatted for citations management applications such as EndNote, too.

  1. Speaking as a beta user, the major delight of douban was the book reviews of all sorts. The “prices comparision” function is actually a little less than ideal because there’s no 2nd hand bookstore database yet. 🙂

Not a big surprise the book tagging site would be poppular in China. Even though the Chinese publishing industry is flawed in many ways, the Chinese speaking intellectuals (not the snobbish kind, just people who read books) often have active online personae… Plus so many books are available online. 😀

  2. And the webmaster mentioned he’s using python and several open source packages to develop the site, that’s a pleasant departure from the typical asp / php chinese community sites… Maybe my statistics is skewed, but quite a few chinese community websites don’t render 100% correct in firefox… My first hateful stare would be casted on the oh-so-popular dvbbs. 😀
